PREVALENCE OF HEARING LOSS

Approximately 31.5 million Americans have communicatively significant hearing loss.  That constitutes approximately nine to ten percent  of the U.S. population (SOURCE:  BETTER HEARING INSTITUTE)

While hearing loss can occur at any age, prevalence of communicatively significant hearing loss in the U.S. Population clearly increases with advancing age.

Less than 5 years   0.63%
5-15 years:   1.63%
5-24 years   2.32%
 25-34 years   4.29%
35-44 years   5.82%
55-64 years   24.40%
75+ years   38.55%

Loss of hearing resulting from the natural aging process is referred to as "presbycusis" and starts around the grand old age of ........ 20.  Yes, 20!  But worry too much as it takes a very long time before declines in hearing, secondary to ageing translate into communication problems.

A good way to make sure decline in hearing is ONLY a result in ageing is to protect your ears when around loud sounds.  Use common sense and you'll be fine.

If it feels like the sound you're around is enough to cause hearing loss, you're probably right!
