Gene McHugh is married to Mary Purinsh, DDS.  Gene and Mary met in high school, both graduating in the first class from Coronado High School  in 1971.  Gene and Mary were married in 1976.

Gene is not a native (being born in Spencer, Iowa) but moved to Colorado at the age of 12.  Gene's parents were Mac and Marian McHugh.  Mac was a pharmacist who worked for Eli Lilly & Co., retired in 1983.  Gene's mother, Marian was an accomplished accompaniest and active at 1st Presbyterian church.  Both parents made to their early 90's before passing on.

Mary is a native and grew up on Colorado Springs' west side.  Her parents were Alex and Emma Purinsh, both immigrants.  Mary is a general practice dentist and has been in private practice since 1980.  For a period of time, when first starting her practice, Mary was the only female dentist in Colorado Springs, so she was kind of a pioneer.  Her first office was located for 30 years in the Old Colorado City area. Mary received her BA with honors in Chemistry from the University of Northern Colorado in 1975 and DDS degree from the University of Iowa in 1979.  In her spare time, Mary enjoys painting, gourmet cooking, and creating wonderful home brew beer (Gene wrote this line).  For more information about Dr. Purinsh (Mary), go to drpurinsh.com. They do not have children, but always had a dog to complete their family.

For most of their professional careers, Mary and Gene practiced in separate locations.  In 2011, they purchased the building shown below and finally had the opportunity to have their practices in the same location.  Called the "DentAudio Building" the inside is new with the latest technical and design features.  Why the Westside? Gene and Mary grew up on the Westside and their intent was to bring investment and professional services to the westside of Colorado Springs.  Since movinig in, the neighborhood has nicely improved - exactly what they had hoped.  Best of all, according to comments from patients and friends, the feeling of "welcomeness" is the nicest part of the DENTAUDIO building. We think you'll agree.

Gene's main outside interest is music.  He performed in plays at the Fine Arts Center, sang in Barbershop and Acapella groups, was a member of the Colorado Springs Chorale for 10 years and sang and played piano with a small rock and roll ensemble.  Mary enjoys painting and is an excellent cook.  They enjoy walking through Red Rock Canyon.  In 2002, the couple purchased land and build a home/cabin in Cuchara, Colorado.  Most weekends, they spend time in Cuchara with their puppy where it's quiet and away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
